The installed capacity of photovoltaic solar energy has surpassed natural gas power generation and biomass power generation, and is second only to hydropower and wind power generation.
According to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Association (Absolar) based on data provided by the National Electricity Agency (Aneel), the installed power of photovoltaic solar energy has come ahead of natural gas and biomass power generation. Solar energy has become the third largest source of electricity in Brazil, after hydropower and wind power.
Combining large-scale solar power plants across the country and some small self-generation projects, Brazil has a total of 16.4 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity, compared with 16.3 GW each for natural gas and biomass. While the gap with the latter two hasn't widened, what's most cheering for the industry is that the market has been growing over the past decade, largely driven by self-generation from home solar.
According to data provided by the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Association, since 2012, solar power has brought more than 86.2 billion reais in new investment in Brazil, 22.8 billion reais in revenue for the national treasury, and has cumulatively created more than 479,800 reais jobs. It also avoids the 23.6 million tons of carbon dioxide typically emitted when generating electricity from other sources.
Many people choose to install solar panels to reduce their electricity bills. Currently, 70% of the solar energy produced in Brazil comes from small solar power systems installed on the roofs of homes, small businesses and rural properties.
